Values Caucus Monthly Coordinating Council Meeting - Jan

Filed under: Committees — BKUN New York @ 8:15 pm

Today we discussed the up and coming programs:

In March during the CSW (Commission on the Status of Women) we are planing to have an event featuring Anges Ndetei, from Kenya. She is coming to New York especially for the CSW from Kenya where a bloodbath is taking place, and has been since the elections . “Agens is a brave leader and a national treasure” says Anele Heiges, one of our council members, “She started a new peace movement called Sackcloth and Beads, Sackcloth from the Christian reference and Beads from the Kenya/African a deep peace symbol. She took part in the elections from her Kibwezi region but did not win. Women candidates were treated desperately badly during the campaign period, one women candidate was shot dead in front of her sisters house. Agnes will be coming to share her story with us and many participants of the CSW and speak about her new peace movement ‘Sackcloth and Beads.”

In June we are having the dynamic and high profile speaker from our neck of the woods, Majora Carter, she was an ordinary person who looked around her neighborhood, the South Bronx and saw that something had to be done. Now director of the organization she founded in 2001 Sustainable South Bronx, she will be sharing her mission and vision with us.

Sustainable South Bronx mission is Environmental Justice through innovative, economically sustainable projects that are informed by community needs. It also addresses land-use, energy, transportation, water and waste policy, and education in order to advance the environmental and economic rebirth of the South Bronx, and to inspire solutions in areas like it across the nation and around the world.

We, the Values Caucus, plan to make this a larger event to be held in the UN building. The date is fixed for June 5, which works very well as it is also World Environment Day. We will keep you posted.
