DPI/NGO Briefing, December 6, 2007.
The 60th Anniversary of the Human Rights Declaration: On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Since its adoption, the declaration has and continues to be a source of inspiration for national and international efforts to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms. Regardless of race, religion or nationality, all men and women everywhere in the world are entitled to the human rights and fundamental freedoms set out in the declaration’s thirty articles. But how many of us really know what our rights are or how to defend them, and who speaks for the voiceless? Thursday’s briefing looked at events and activities planned for the coming year to celebrate, raise awareness, educate, defend and promote the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), sixty years after its adoption.
